VM Vocation Resources :: Parish Phase IV Affirmation Appreciation for Retired Priests and Religious

Appreciation for Retired Priests and Religious

Priests and religious who have served the Church faithfully throughout their lives remain spiritual treasures long after retirement. Though no longer active in day-to-day ministry, their prayers, wisdom, and witness continue to enrich the faith community. Offering appreciation to retired clergy and religious is a simple but powerful way to honor their lifelong “yes” to God.

This activity can be carried out in many ways. Your parish might organize a card-writing campaign, deliver care packages during the holidays, or arrange parish visits to local retirement communities. During Advent or Easter, parishioners or youth groups could go caroling, share meals, or pray with them. Even a phone call or homemade craft from a child can brighten a retired priest or sister’s day.

The vocation ministry can lead the charge, coordinating outreach and ensuring these holy men and women feel remembered and valued. These interactions also serve to bridge generations—helping younger parishioners understand and appreciate the sacrifices and joys of vocational life.

Retired priests and religious may not serve at the altar anymore, but their spiritual presence remains deeply impactful. By affirming them, we remind the entire parish that vocations are lifelong journeys worth honoring at every stage.

As Scripture says in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing good.” Recognizing those who’ve done good their whole lives is both an act of gratitude and a source of inspiration.
